This is a story about a teenage girl, Mallory who has to change her life after the death of her boyfriend, Brian that she caused, but it as self-defence. The plot evolves as she moves away from her home, family and best friend, Colleen. Mallory now has to learn about what it's like to be a part of a private school, where she finds an old friend Reid there. He helps Mallory settle in and their friendship grows, and they become very close. Through all of this, Mallory hears a 'boom, boom, boom' in her head, a voice saying 'wait' and a handprint that mysteriously appears on her shoulder she believes that she is being haunted by Brian, so needs to take sleeping pills so that she can sleep. Mallory's friend, Colleen comes to visit, together they find out a few things that happen at school with some of the students 'secrets' that come to light. Colleen gets hurt, Mallory feels responsible, and through all of what happens finally learns what's been haunting her, and why ... The storyline is built up of two-stories-in one, the 'before' story that brought Mallory to the Monroe Prep School in the first place, then as the story unravels, it all begins to make more sense, but not what you think. Mallory's past ends up helping others. If are the sort of reader that gets into teenage 'Hysteria', then this book is for you. This book is not for regular people, it is for people who enjoy something out of the ordinary. It is based on New World a planet that is very different from our own, a planet that is shrouded in mystery, deceipt and lies. It will take everything you learn and turn it upside down. A planet where there is no quiet at all only a constant flow of noise over noise over noise and its all inside your head even the animals noise. This book would suit people who are into mysteries, it is a book that would suit senior students and teachers. 16-year-old Callie lost her parents when the Genocide Spore War wiped out everyone except those who were vaccinated first - the very young and very old. She and her little brother Tyler are on the run, living as squatters, scavenging for food and water, fighting off renegades who would kill for absolutely anything. Hope comes in the form of the Prime Destination also known as the Body Bank run by a mysterious figure, known only as 'The Old Man'. The Body Bank allows teenagers to rent out their bodies to 'Enders' - the elderly members of this new society - who want to be young again. All Callie wants to do is provide Tyler a home, but renter, Helena has other ideas. She wants to close down The Body Bank, and it could involve committing a murder ......... I found this book a great read, it kept me hooked right until the end. I'm looking forward to the next book - 'Enders' to find out what else happens. The storyline has a couple of great twists, especially at the end. It's a great read for anyone interested in future technologies, and one day, who knows, it may even exist. Watch the trailer below to start you off .... Wow,The Perks of being a Wallflower follows the story of a teenage boy named Charlie in his first year at High School and the high, lows, struggles and challenges he faces throughout the year. The book is a collection of letters that Charlie has written to a person that he doesn't know, he needed someone to talk so he wrote these letters. The letters show Charlie at his most vulnerable points with deep thoughts and feelings portrayed. At the start of the book, Charlie is a shy, scared and disturbed young man. He has suffered loss in his life with the susicide if his best friend and the death of his Aunty which left him feeling very bad and somewhat responsible for the events. As the book continues Charlie meets two senior students, Patrick and Sam, which change his life for ever, they open him to the best moments in his life, they show him love, life and give him hope and happiness. The book takes an unexpected turn at the end when some disturbing news about his childhood and his Aunty comes to light. I decided to read the book after watching the movie directed by the same person who wrote the book. The movie was amazing, but the book took you to a different, more intense place and we saw the characters in a different light and learn't a lot more about them, especially Charlie and Patrick. The book also describe events that had happened which were not in the movie but I felt would have been important in the movie. I would recommend the book to students an any age of high school/teenage life. l loved this storyline about how 15 year-old Simone and her family (supporters of the French Resistance) help a fallen New Zealand airman, Paul, through German-occupied France during World War II. They had to avoid being captured while assisting Paul to safety. It's about the race against time, split loyalities, betrayal, defiance, fear, quick thinking, and some loved ones who pay a high price. This is a story that although fictional, is based on some of Tricia Glensor's (NZ author) father's experiences as he recorded them in his diary. Of how a legendary family, the Fillerin's) sheltered her father in 1942 and helped him escape. I found it an easy straightforward story to read, with great detail, twists and turns that kept you hooked. It had you feeling as though you were a part of it. "It's a good day to be a bad guy". If you are into the Skulduggery Pleasant series, here's a bit of an off shoot about one of the characters, Tanith Low, a leather-cladded, sword whelding blonde, Adept sorceror and Remanent Host. Originally one of the 'good-guys', she was possessed by a Remanent, a type of shadow creature, that turns her into a 'not-so-good-guy'. She believes that she can help the one called 'Darquesse' (An evil sorceress who is to destroy the world), by collecting magical weapons (The God-Killers) that may stop Darquesse completing ending the world, and wants the weapons destroyed to see it all happen. Tanith Low teams up with a handful of misfits with their own powers to achieve this: Billie-Ray Sanguine - who travels underground. Dusk - the vampire. Springheeled Jack - A mage with an obsession with killing, capable of leaping over great distances and haunts the roofs and streets of London at night looking for people to murder. Black Annis- turns blue and eats people, the sun turns her to stone. Sabine - is a Leech, allowing her to absorb or transfer magic to or from an object for a limited amount of time, the most being about 90 hours. Wilhelm Scream - understands Symbol Magic, he's needed to undone the protective symbols on the weapons. Tanith has told them that she knows the answer to their one largest secret about themselves, and will tell them if they help her. But do they get to know? And is it a good day to be a bad guy? .... This is a great read for Skullduggery Pleasant followers, and I recommend it for all to read. It's a light, unput-downable storyline. But can't wait to see if there's other Skulduggery Pleasant books to come. Those who have read the series will know what I mean...Enjoy. This book is about a uni-student named Ash McCarthy. Ash and his little Down's Syndrome brother Mikey have to leave town, it was no longer safe. There was a political war going on and a bomb was dropped and it killed Ash's father. Ash's mother left when he was just little. His father told Ash and Mikey that she had died but she had joined a secret organisation called the Muru. Ash finds his mother and she tries to kill him. She was addicted to 'P'. Ash leaked the hiding place of the Muru. His mother took a bullet for him... I would recommend this book. It is a great book and think lots of people will enjoy it. If you like thriller stories this book is for you! English teacher Mr Smeaton recommended it to me. I read this book for the NZ Post Children's Book Awards Literary Challenge 2013. This book is about a 16 year-old boy, named Finn Duggie. His father "Mr Druggie" went on trial for manslaughter and Finn left Ngamea at any chance he had, he gave boarding school in Auckland a go, meeting a 'new girl' Mia, an new enemy, Edward and a couple new friends, Hobbsie and Andy. Mia invited him to their school ball. Things went down at an after-ball that was not allowed, Hobbsie, Andy and Finn's best friend, drowned. As the ambulance arrived at the after-ball, he was dead, never to breathe again. Everyone was terrified, crying and also scared. Scared of what was going to happen. When the police had arrived, they were to stay in the property and no one was to leave. Finn's father's trial was the next day and Finn wasn't going to let this happen to his father. Andy and Finn went to Ngamea that day, Finn told him and the lawyer that it was him that hit the girl, he had the spare key and slammed it down on the table... I'd recommend this book to people around the ages of 15-17 years. It is about teen lives, choices and consequences. The story grabbed me right from the start. This book was recommended to me by English teacher, Mr Smeaton. I read it as part of the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards Literary Challenge 2013. |
