The 'American Dream' was the best thing 17 year old Hannah could have wished for. Her parents were killed in a café bombing, an now she was struggling to financially support herself and her grandmother who needed an urgent cataract operation. America could be the blessing in disguise for her to help her grandmother. She too a job offer of being a Nanny. But was it all what she would have expected? Working 16 hour-long days for months, and still no pay. The family she Nannied for treated her as a slave, among other things. She was beaten, scared for her life. Could she find a way out and maybe go back to Moldova, Russia to her grandmother? She finds a friend in Colin, the 17 year old boy next door who helps her. But is it too late? This is a story about Human Trafficking. The American Government estimates 14,500 to 17,500 people are trafficked into the United States every year at least half of them are children and teenagers. They are kept imprisoned by words and fear. They are America's modern-day slaves.
Earth girl is set in the future, around the year 2788. It’s about an 18 year old girl, Jarra who in an interplanetary society was labelled a Handicap (or planetary slang, ‘Ape’), due to an immune system that doesn’t allow her and others like her survive anywhere else but Earth. Jarra devises a plan to apply for a Pre-History course at University Asgard. But she can’t let any of the Norms (planetary slang, ‘Exos’) know that she is a Handicap; so she lies about who she, her friends, and family are. Meet Jarra from Military Command. She later finds out that her lies are actually true: her true parents are Military, and had to give her up to Earth because of her dysfunctional immune system. No sooner that she finds out about them, she gets notice that they both die on another planet while on duty. At University Asgard, Jarra learns about other students on her course, the exos; and about Earth’s History before the Exodus to other planets, through Dig Sites, much like Archaeologist’s we have today. She soon lets her tutor, Playdon know she has had experience with Dig sites, and also has a pilot’s licence. Because of her experience with Dig Sites, she is given the placement as Tag Leader, a person that has a ‘life-line’ attached to them and tags rubble from caved in buildings of what was the old New York. A Tag-Leader needs a Tag-Support, someone who a Tag Leader can trust with their life; to pull you out when things get dangerous in the site. Meet Tag-Support, Fian, from Hercules. On a Dig Site excursion, another dig team, Cassandra 2 have been caught in a cave-in and Asgard 6, Jarra’s prehistory class, are the teams that rescue them. Jarra and Fian become heroes. As tradition is very strong on dig sites, Jarra and Fian are invited to Cassandra 2’s dome to accept a gift and thanks from the team. Jarra receives her very own impact suit. A once in a 100 year event takes place, a solar storm, a Carrington Event. This temporarily takes out the Earth Portal Network, stranding both Jarra & Fian with the Cassandra 2 team. It is here that Fian & Jarra begin a Twoing Contract, but does it still happen? Can Fian get over Jarra’s lies? The Carrington Event proves to be stronger than first thought. The Military crews manning the solar power arrays need to disconnect them for safety reasons, now rendering Earth with no power. The crews need to evacuate in ships to avoid intense radiation levels. Five ships disband, one crashes in the Old New York Dig site and both Jarra & Fian are recruited to help with a large rescue attempt to save the people buried amongst the rubble in the ship and not for her or Fian to get hurt while doing it, but things don’t always go to plan as Jarra finds out … You will find a whole new futuristic language come through this story, once you understand what it all means, it’s a great read. Great for those who are into futuristic, space, interplanetary reading. When I think of 'The Dead Ways', I think of Zombies, Death Lords, secret organisations and a group of four that will try to bring all of them down. Scott is the main character is kidnapped but manages to escape. Once he tells his father, his father starts acting very suspiciously. Not too long after that Scott's father is murdered while working on a project that will change England forever. Scott doesn't believe his father's death came naturally and investigates. During his investigation he makes new friends and with his friends he finds out that the government's project, - 'The Greening of the Roads Project' - where all roads will be demolished and replaced with trains. By destroying the roads a door will be unlocked and Death Lords will be released to destroy England. Only Scott and his friends can stop the door being unlocked. Weird and impossible things begin to happen. Can Scott and his friends stop it and return things to normal? This is a great book that I recommend to anyone who likes Zombies, Mystery and Supernatural books. A truly weird book that exposes you to a world of impossibilities. Statues walk and talk and when you offend the Stone you must make amends or forever be cursed. When George offends the Stone this world becomes his and he must navigate through monsters, riddles and the cursed. There is danger around every corner in the from of gargoyles, dragons and even a minotaur. Will George survive and make amends for his offense or will he join the cursed? This book takes a while to get into but really is worth it and I recommend it to people who haven't had a good read for a while. Starters is based after a war. This war led to spore missiles being launched carrying a deadly disease. When people found out about the launch they flocked to be immunised but it was decided that the elderly and the very young were to be immunised. Only some of those in the ages between were immunised. After the war the elderly took over and they can live for hundreds of years as Enders. These Enders control everything even the bodies of the youth. A secret company nicknamed 'The Body Bank' is paying youth (also known as Starters) to allow Enders to take over their body for short periods of time. But when Callie gets caught up in assassination plots, enslavement plots and an new life she knows nothing of, she has to learn quick if she is to survive and bring down the very people she works for. This is a one of a kind book that gets better and better the further you read into it. I would recommend it to experienced readers who enjoy something out of the ordinary. There is no way to properly capture this book in words. This review is nothing compared to the book. The front cover says Hunger Games only with vampires. Which would have been pretty accurate if the main character hadn't put a stop to it. The world is now controlled by vampires who cannot go out in the sun and go about their business at night. The humans are known as hepers and are practically extinct. The main character who we come to know as Gene is a heper who has lived amongst the vampires all his life. He expresses no emotions, lives in darkness and attracts no attention . Until the ruler of the land decrees there is to be a heper hunt and 5-10 hunters will participate. Gene who has stayed out of the spotlight all his life has hust been picked and everyone knows him because he is a famous heper hunter. Against the odds, a 17 year old Gene has survived in a world where humans are eaten to almost extinction by vampires. His father taught him everything he needed to know to survive when he was a young boy, before they got to his father. The remaining humans, or Hepers as they are named are housed in large domes and studied at the Heper Institute. Every ten years there is a government sponsored hunt. Gene is selected to be one of the fighters. Then there's Ashley June, she's like Gene, trying to survive. They both have to learn the art of the hunt - but Gene also has to keep the real him from being discovered, as fellow competitors suspicions grow about Gene's true nature, do they get to finish the hunt? Do they get to be free? |
