The main idea of the story was that of surviving first contact with a hostile alien race. The characters of the story have to put aside their differences and form a cohesive military force in order to defend against the hostiles. "The aliens had just started a war - and there would be a lot more casualties to come."

The main character of the story is Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson, he creates a strong reaction as he is able to deal with the pressure of an impending invasion and using his military expertise creates a militia force capable of resistance. "Every one of these bastards you kill is a thousand lives saved!" Avery begins his final battle speech ending with a parting line, "And we will save them. Every last one!"

The story is split between multiple perspectives, firstly Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson, leading a militia force to defend Reach, secondly an alien by the name of Dadab who religious advisor aboard a ship which discovers humanity, and an alien prophet call, fortitude who uncovers a plot in his religion which would destroy it, which relates to humanity which he wants destroyed.
