8 of our book lovers represented Hawera High School at the 2013 Paper Plus Literary Challenge at the Hawera Community Centre yesterday. They competed against many other schools from throughout Taranaki. Students were asked questions about the NZ Post Childrens' book awards finalists' books - which was a selection of new books written by New Zealand authors. Competitors read a varitety of selected books from the non-fiction and young adult section. Jennifer Beck - author of Remember that November (a book about Parihaka) spoke to the students about her book and explained how she became an author. Prizes of vouchers and books from Paper Plus were presented to the winners. Danyelle Ryan-Harrop won a spot prize. Our Librarian Mrs Merry Wallis attended most of the day. She said "it was great to see so many young people in the competition and to see HHS attending and displaying amazing memory recall of the various storylines they had read earlier. They were all having fun!"
